Peavey Wolfgang Special TR Transparent Red Flame

Nickname: "Animal"
Built: N/A (Neck: 1999)
Acquired: May 2006
Story: Though I'd never previously found the red flame tops very appealing, I bought the body for this Wolfgang Special off eBay when I saw the original owner part out and sell each individual piece (a crazy move, in my opinion, to part out the second-rarest production version of the Wolfgang). I got it for a decent price, so I figured I could either replace the body of one of my custom Wolfgangs or use it for another one. In the end, though, the only thing I wanted to do was restore the guitar. I already had numerous Wolfgang pieces on hand, and I found a neck that had been hardly used. Shamefully, I must admit to sacrificing another Wolfgang Special to finish bringing this one back to life. I needed the pickups and Floyd Rose tremolo--two items that fetch hefty prices on the parts market. By coincidence I found a beat up gloss black Special on eBay with some misspelled words in the listing; its condition and lack of adequate search key words (it was a "Peavy Wolgang") meant I scored it cheap. The guitar wasn't out of the box for five minutes before it was almost completely disassembled. I harvested the parts I needed and resold the neck and body to make my initial investment back (and then some). So the transparent red Wolfgang was returned to factory-stock condition, though the neck serial number of course did not reflect its color and ship date in the Peavey log. In March 2009 I replaced the stock pickups with a DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge position and a DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck position--the combination that most closely resembles the pups from the famous EBMM EVH/Axis guitars. I'd originally had the DiMarzios in another parts-Wolfgang (#22) that was broken back down and sold for financial and practical reasons. Around the same time I also sold my purple flame EBMM Axis and in turn assigned this Wolfgang the new position of "EBMM-like" guitar, which was good in the way it then had something different to offer from its many counterparts. In keeping with set precedent, this flame top Wolfgang Special is nicknamed after a Muppet--the notorious Electric Mayhem drummer Animal.
