08/27/2007 @ 03:31 AM: Per the usual, time is the enemy when it comes to progress on the various projects I've got in the works (or would like to have in the works, as the case may be). My focus for the latter half of the summer has been on three specifically. (The beginning of summer was chaotically consumed by moving and traveling.)
The band has been taking a break from gigs for a couple of months, but we'll be back on stage again this fall. Our intention was to finish the songs recorded for the new CD and get three new ones completed. Well crazy schedules have left us little time to work on new stuff, but the eight tracked thus far are in pretty good shape. I've had to go back and re-work a couple of the early ones, as they didn't quite live up to the standards set by the newest songs. I've maintained for the better part of the process that this CD will be one of the best for me personally with regard to writing, production, and engineering; that continues to be the case. Songs recorded thus far are: "Interesting," "I Wish I Could Be George Bush," "Bar Fight," "Friends (With Benefits)," "Space Lesbians," "Silent Treatment," "Pink Is Back," and "Take The High Road."
The extremely long-running film project revisions is still inching toward completion. The final edit has essentially been in place since last summer, and we started to work on the final audio mix at that time. The winter months saw an unintentional hiatus, but as of spring James and I got back to meeting at least once a week to log some hours on the mix. In the interest of using our brief weekly time together actually working, I never went back and watched the finished 15 or-so minutes (all sequential) that we did last year; we just picked up somewhere in the middle and have been knocking out one or two scenes at a time (the process is painstakingly slow). Last week, however, I got curious to see how the mixes compared. So we watched our work from last summer, and we watched our work from this summer (only about seven minutes of the movie divide the two sections--non-linear editing is nice). I was indeed very pleased with the mix overall, and for the first time ever in this ongoing project I felt like we were really on our way. And we will keep plucking away until this damn thing is finally done.
I had kind of a weird realization a couple of weekends ago. Now at age 32, I've had fleeting moments of wondering what original material I actually have to show for the decade that was my 20s. I released a not-very-good solo CD in '95 and have only done demos and web releases since. I've produced or engineered hundreds of stuff from other artists, but again there were really only a few things that I would say I'm really proud of. I'm very pleased with the work on AT/DT's new album, but at the pace we're going the damn CD won't be out until next year. So I started thinking about all the original songs I've recorded in my studio over the past ten years--about 60 total--and realized there are a few gems among them. With some work I could easily put together 10-20 songs and have a great album. (This realization hit when I got one of my own songs from about 1998 stuck in my head. I started singing the chorus and went: "Shit, this is pretty catchy!") So a couple of Sundays ago I spent the whole day in the recording studio going over old tracks and making rough mixes. A few songs are just a couple of tweaks away from being done, but a few others will require some major overhauling (like I'll attempt to have DT re-track some drums). I've suddenly started feeling really good about what I've done, and in a stupid symbolic way I think I'll actually have an "album" (in the truest sense of the term) to hold and say: "This is what I did in my 20s." I'll post songs to my solo MySpace page as they're completed.
