02/12/2009 @ 09:29 AM: Six Songs In Six Weeks: Week Two "Today Was A Good Day" Written, Produced, Recorded & Performed by Andrew Thomas MP3 Download: "Today Was A Good Day" (7.5 MB) Week Two of the Six Songs In Six Weeks project is here, and literally just completed is this second song, "Today Was A Good Day." I borrowed the chord progression and initial idea from an abandoned theatrical score piece I wrote about a year-and-a-half ago. The creation process was quite similar to last week's release, "It Ain't Easy." Again I recorded the entire song in my home studio, but I had only about half as much time to work. The drum loop is stock, but the rest of the instrumentation is real and performed entirely by me: vocals, guitars, and bass. In my mind this song is unfinished; I'd hoped to put live percussion and a few other small bits on, but my obligations to other studio and music work this past week didn't afford me the time. And so "done enough" it is. Below is my production journal and the lyrics. Photos of the process can be found on my MySpace and Facebook pages. See you next week! -AT -- Production Journal--Week Two Sunday 2/8 Evening - Reviewed previously constructed loops for possible use with Song #2. Late Evening - Decided to revive a once-abandoned piece originally started for a theatre production score. It's "minor" quality appealed to me this evening. All that existed of the original piece was a stock drum loop and 12-string electric guitar. I'll keep the loop but re-record the 12-string part. Tonight I recorded a clean double of the 12-string part using the #15 custom shop Wolfgang and the JC setting on the Micro Cube. I'll likely write some sort of bridge to offer something different from the verse and chorus sections. Tuesday 2/10 Morning - Edited clean guitar tracks from Sunday night. Recorded new 12-string electric parts with similar setting as the original parts. Tried to track down Cody to see if he'd be available to record a bass part. Late Evening - Edited track and worked on the mix. Recorded bass using the JP-90 direct into the board. Record "ambiance" guitar tracks with the ivory Wolf, Tech 21 Comptortion, and Boss delay. Wednesday 2/11 Late Evening - Wrote lyrics, recorded vocals, edited tracks. Recorded guitar solo with the gold Wolfgang and the Micro Cube. Edited more tracks, mixed, and mastered. -- "Today Was A Good Day" Music & Lyrics by Andrew Thomas ©2009 Andrew Thomas Music (ASCAP) Today was a good day For walking in my sleep around And I can't remember The only thing I'd never found If I just stay away will you know Our dreams were shooting low And I just fade away In truth there comes a time when we show Nostalgic friends are in tow And now they drift away Today was a good day I never heard your voice at all I cease to remember The shadows on the wall Today was a good day The seasons changed my mind We're sitting on nothing But there's something still to find If I just stay away will you know Our dreams were shooting low And I just fade away In truth there comes a time when we show Nostalgic friends are in tow And now they drift away Today was a good day For walking in my sleep around
