04/07/2009 @ 10:14 PM: I completed another custom guitar today, though in reality this one has been sitting essentially completed since last fall. This guitar was a complicated one in that it was assembled with two completely different types of pickup systems, and the wiring of these pickups and some setup details didn't get finalized until this past week. I absolutely love playing electric guitar, but I've had getting out and playing solo "acoustic" shows on the mind for some time, and in general I'm just not as comfortable playing acoustic guitars. I started researching piezo pickup options for electric guitars (piezo pickups are commonly used in acoustic guitars and stringed instruments when amplification is necessary) and selected for this project a bridge made by L.R. Baggs that has independent piezo pickups installed in each string saddle. I added the L.R. Baggs Ctrl-X pre-amp system for maximum output options, and quickly this guitar became about creating an axe that could function in both an electric and acoustic fashion. The body was made by Doug of A&D, a gentleman whose work I've come to appreciate tremendously. (I've previously used two other bodies crafted by Doug--the Thinline Strat and the Jazz Bass.) It is made of alder and features a 1/4" walnut top, and I again went with a natural Tru-Oil and wax finish. This guitar features two output jacks; the first is a regular output for the magnetic pickups, and the second can function as a piezo-only output or, with the flick of a switch, a blend of both the magnetic and piezo pickups--each has their own independent volume control as well.
